In 1769, Ebenezer, Silas, and Jonathan Zane crossed the mountains from Pennsylvania to the mouth of Wheeling Creek where they made "tomahawk claims" and built a cabin. By this act the three Zane brothers established the first permanent settlement in this part of the wilderness which grew to become the City of Wheeling. We have now reached the 300th anniversary of this notable event that has affected us all. There is no better way to commemorate this important occasion than a huge historical bicentennial celebration.
